Hoover, 74, had been serving multiple life sentences at the federal supermax prison in Florence, Colorado. He was first convicted in 1973 for ordering the murder of a man suspected of stealing from the gang. In the 1990s, federal investigators said Hoover continued leading the gang from behind bars, ultimately charging him with drug conspiracy, extortion, and other offenses. He was convicted in 1997 and sentenced to six life terms, according to Newsweek.

The move follows years of public campaigning for Hoover’s release, including a widely publicized 2021 concert in Los Angeles where Kanye West and Drake called for clemency. As noted by TMZ, the two rappers headlined the “Free Larry Hoover” benefit concert, which helped bring national attention to his case.

Trump has not yet issued a formal statement explaining the rationale for his decision. The commutation has already sparked renewed debate around criminal justice reform, presidential clemency, and the legacy of gang-related sentencing policies.
