CHICAGO, IL (Headline News USA) (Copyright © 2025) — A Chicago police encounter with a fleeing suspect led to gunfire on the West Side during Saturday night which resulted in the hospitalization of the 21-year-old man and multiple felony charges against him.

Police received information about a large crowd at North Austin Avenue and West Cortland Street in the Galewood area at 10:40 p.m. before they arrived at the scene. The police found one male individual attempting to escape at that time.

According to Police, that is when 21-year-old Kewion Kingcade faced the officers with a weapon in his hands after he started running during the pursuit. The officer fired his weapon which hit Kingcade in the leg and hand area.

The medical team transported Kingcade to Loyola University Medical Center for treatment because his condition was reported as fair by CBS News Chicago.

The police collected a weapon from the crime scene. The situation remains unclear regarding whether Kingcade discharged any shots from his weapon. No officers were injured.

The authorities filed charges against Kingcade for aggravated assault of a peace officer as well as unlawful use of a weapon and additional related criminal offenses on Sunday. At the time of the shooting Kingcade faced four active arrest warrants yet the police did not specify what those warrants entailed.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) started investigating this incident as part of their standard procedures for all police shootings occurring in Chicago. The officer involved in the shooting remains on administrative duties until COPA finishes their investigation.

The body camera footage will be part of the COPA review process but officials have not specified when the footage will become available to the public. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability requests anyone with information or supplementary video footage to share it with them.

The shooting occurred in Galewood despite this neighborhood remaining off the police radar yet it shares borders with neighborhoods that frequently experience tension between police and local residents. The incident happened during a period when police force use remains under intense public scrutiny especially when it involves chases on foot.

Kingcade will face a detention hearing at the court on Tuesday.

The Chicago Police Department has not provided any additional information about the involved officer or the events that led to the shooting incident.
